. so what was a very popular idea with democrats before the election is no longer the case. so times change. it's complex. let's hope boehner's back in washington, obama's back in washington tomorrow. the players are there. harry reid is there. let's hope that they get there and for the sake of the country for the sake of our stability of our fiscal well, they get together on a plan that works. nobody will get 100% of what they want. hopefully somebody -- we get enough of what we want to keep the wheels turning. >> ana, do you think speaker boehner's leadership is suffering while this crisis continues? >> you know, i think a little bit of both to be honest with you. certainly he tried to get something from his caucus last week. that didn't work. that was not a strong moment for him. it was a moment of weakness. but at the same time, i think he looks like he's really trying. and it also paints the picture and makes it obvious that, you know, he's not just negotiating with president obama. he also has to then come back and sell to his own people, sell to his own caucus, which at points

with you, dick. you know, when the president was elected, americans were optimistic, they were hopeful, the numbers were quite high. here we are four years later after an obama presidency, and, you know, the public's expectations are bleaker now, more dire and gloomy. in fact, more so than they've been in a decade. which invites the question, was hope and change sort of a clever marketing illusion? >> well, this president's created close to five million new jobs, the economy's ticking up in every area; construction, small businesses are picking up. all of it's moving in the right direction. the folks who have spun doom and gloom, the romney campaign spent a billion dollars spinning doom and gloom, and so with that kind of money behind it, a lot of people bought that message. but a lot of people's lives reflect a much better reality within what the republican campaign -- gregg: yeah, but looking at another recession here. ben bernanke's guy who coined the phrase fiscal cliff. he says if we fall off of it in seven or eight days, that's going to lead to yet another recession. >> well, and

against roosevelt. my dad thought if roosevelt got elected there'd never be another election. >> reporter: a vocal republican in his earlier years, he now leans left and a big obama supporter. >> i brought along figures i thought would be of interest to him, that was when i got the presidential medal of freedom. >> reporter: he's never had political ambitions like his father. >> that's my dad's campaign picture when he was 39 years old running for congress in 1942. this is my dad's desk, this sat on his desk when i was a kid, when i was 10 years old. i always admired it. >> reporter: i love this, the too hard box. >> there's a lot of things that belong in there. the real problem is if they belong in there and i don't realize it. >> reporter: then the model mars rover given to him by opportunities at caltech. >> that beats getting a t shirt. >> reporter: and the mock "sports illustrated" cover. >> they'll bring me out as water boy. >> reporter: no e-mail, perhaps the secret to buffett's success. i am convinced no e-mail is the secret to his success. >> who is tweeting while you're talking

moments of the election best described as history-making politics. a supreme court decision upholding the constitutionality of obama care and if that doesn't strike you as political, can consider what would have happened on the campaign trail if the high court had struck down the president's signature first-term achievement. >> at a certain point i've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that i think same-sex couples should be able to get married. >> reporter: the first president to endorse same-sex marriage was a daily double moment. good politics aimed at an activist wing of his party's base and most certainly history. and finally, the number one political moment of the year is easy during elections. >> cnn projects that bar

. and the third part is $1 trillion in obama's taxes. that's the obama care taxes they hid from you because they're all scheduled to come in after he got safely elected. >> let's go back to the bush-era tax cuts. for you, given your position, that's really what we want to focus on here. you make the point that democrats could have voted before when they had super majorities or big majoritiemajo and that's a fair point. but in part thanks to you, voting for tax increases is a political death for republicans and democrats. that brings me to my next question. i've talked to republicans and democrats who think we are going to go off the cliff, and here's the reason why. if we go off the cliff, everybody's taxes go up automatically. then congress can come back in january and vote for a tax cut as opposed to tax increases. what do you think about that? >> one of the challenges, of course, is people see this happening. they realize the president has not been negotiating at all over the past three months. we learned days and weeks and months afterwards that they had non-meetings where this is going on.

in america. there have been two elections where one party has had far more financial power than the other. one was here in california with meg whitman, and one was nationally. romney clearly had more money than obama for most of that campaign, and in both cases, the one with the most money lost. >> isn't that great? >> what does that tell you about the american people? >> the people are getting smarter. they're going, i don't like all this amount of money spent on this election. campaign finance reform is very important, and i hope somebody does something about it. you should have a given amount, equal amount, equal air time, and that's it. that idea of corporations being people. no, no, it's not -- this is a country of, by, and for the people, not of, by, and for the corporation. you know, it's like -- because i'm so against gmos, the modified food, and i'm so against lobbying by chemical companies, lobbying, and that proposition 37 was bad, and that's scary because the poison in our foods and in the air and they give discretionary polluters. we are having climate change. the republicans
